Family Gardening

by John Yazo

Family Gardening is a good way to spend quality time together. There are many educational way to get kids  involved in gardening that are fun and exciting. Letting them create an environment to attract wildlife like bird baths for the birds, flowers for butterflies or just shaded shelter for toads to life in the garden are just a few things that will excite children.

Creating a small area for children to start there own small garden by themselves will teach them to respect and care for the environment and life. Also incorporate a small area to start a compost pile will teach them about recycling and the good it does for the environment while providing food for the plants that they are growing.

Start early to get the interest in the garden. A good time to do this is when you are looking through seed catalogs in the winter. Let them select the plants that they want to grow. Once they have decided what they want to plant give them a sheet of paper and let them sketch there garden on the paper to plan there garden.

Another part of gardening that is exciting for children is to have them make a journal of there garden starting with the sketch of the garden they are planting and include things like seed packets from what they have planted to photos of the garden throughout the growing season. They can even take flowers that they have grown and include them in the journal by pressing and drying them.

There is nothing better than the look on the face of a child when pick there first flower, fruit or vegetable that they have grown in there own garden.
