by John Yazo

There are several advantages to preparing you garden in the fall for spring planting.Fall is a great time to test the soils ph. If you need to amend the soil to balance the ph it is a great time to add lime or other mineral amendments. Organic amendments need time to be broken down by the organisms in the soil. This will give them the time they need to replenish the soil for spring planting. It is also a good time to add compost to the soil and turn it under.

Another reason to prepare your garden in the fall is if the area is wet in the early spring when planting season starts and dry in the fall. Take advantage of the dry fall and get it ready so you  can start your garden earlier is the spring. Growing seasons can be to short as it is. You will benefit from the fall preparation.

Insect prevention is another good reason that a garden should be cleaned of all debris . This will prevent unwanted insects from harboring over winter in your garden.

You  can start your earlier crops easier if the soil is prepared before winter. When comes around there are a lot of activity going on between the vegetable garden, flower beds and the lawn.
