Fall Gardening - Don't Stop!....Keep Gardening!
by John Yazo
Fall
is the perfect time to keep your garden growing with a
new crop plants that love the cooler climates. This
is a great time to take advantage of the cool
temperatures and the moist air to grow the same crops that you planted
in the early spring.
Crops like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, peas, spinach and lettuce are excellent crops to grow in the cool temperatures that the fall will provide.
Fall is also the best time to prepare your garden for early spring planting and to grow a green manure cover crop on all areas of the garden that have exposed soil. A cover crop of green manure is an excellent way to replenish organic matter, nitrogen and other nutrients back into the garden soil.
When growing a green manure cover crop for the purpose of adding organic matter into your garden soil legume species and non- legume species of grass mixes are both good choices.
