Where to Start When Wanting to Grow an Edible Landscape

by John Yazo

Creating an edible landscape can be a fun and a learning experience. It is a great way to make good use of areas of your yard that need that little extra touch to the landscape and is also a great way to bring the natural beauty of nature into your yard.

With a little simple planning you can grow flowers, fruits, herbs and vegetables among your existing landscape that will both add beauty and be a food source for your everyday needs. When creating this type of landscape project, you have many options. They can be planted in containers, pots, window boxes or as a part of your existing garden beds around the yard.

Design your gardens around the area you have to work in, large space is not important, so don't let living in a city apartment hold you back from growing a garden. The key to growing this type of garden is to use the space you have and as efficiently as possible.

Think outside the traditional garden, you don't need a dedicated garden to grow flowers, fruits, herbs or vegetables. You can plant strawberries, low-growing herbs or flowers as a ground cover. Train your peas and pole beans to climb a trellis and plant grapes vines as a perennial on a fence or arbor. Adding fruit or nut trees to your landscape is a great way to add shade areas and using berry bushes in place of shrubs.

Have fun and start your own personal edible landscape, the benefits can be very rewarding.
