Organic Gardening - Creating a Garden For Privacy

by John Yazo

Living in the city or even the suburbs these days among cluster homes, condos, developments or apartments and with little land can make for quite an up close and personal view of your neighbors. Although togetherness can be nice, there are times when we all look for our privacy.

Plants are a friendly alternative to putting up a fence or other barrier to block out unwanted glances, while still letting light in and creating a natural environment.

There are several ways to use plants for privacy:

* Let vines climb trellises to create a green wall. Plants like ivy, morning glory and cardinal climber are all good choices for trellises and grow quickly.

* Use containers and plant tall plants to create a living fence. These can be placed in a row, staggered, placed in clusters and moved around when needed.

* Window boxes are a great way to provide a gentle screen while adding personality to a window.

* Hanging plants are another alternative to be placed in front of windows or hung off post that are incorporated in your landscape. They can also be placed in rows, clusters and at different heights.

* Using tall evergreen shrubs that keep their leaves year-round to block the view through the winter months will add green to your landscape when all the deciduous trees have lost there leaves.

* Instead of a solid hedge consider a staggered planting of trees that will filter the view without totally blocking it completely, this will give you a feeling of more space by borrowing part of the view from neighboring yards.

* Deciduous trees or shrubs like lilacs which grow quickly, add color, and have a fragrant flowers in the spring.

* Ornamental grasses are another unique choice, especially the tall varieties. Many of these types of grasses will thrive in large plant containers.

* Create a hedge row by planting tall annuals like corn or sunflowers can be incorporated in with a flower, herb, or vegetable garden to block a view.

There are many ways that privacy can be incorporated in your landscape by the planting of flowers, vegetables, grasses and trees. It can also create an enjoyable and relaxing environment at the same time.
