by John Yazo
Organic
gardening at home is a great way to fight the rising costs that are
continuously happening everyday and to
know the food on your table is
fresh and chemical free. With a few basic supplies, you can be on your
way to growing your own thriving crops in your own yard. Containers,
pots, window boxes or even growing your vegetables
among your existing
landscape are great way of keeping your gardens small and manageable,
while adding character to your home.
First, when you are planning your garden design, you will need to create a list. This list should contain the names of the vegetables and herbs you use the most. When you are just starting out with your first garden, keep it small and simple. Having a garden that is easy manage will let you enjoy your gardening experience and not turn it into another job. Expand your garden when you feel you have everything under control.
The next step in your garden design is to research the plants you want to grow and make sure that they will do well in your area. Not all plants will grow everywhere. Local nurseries and even a seed catalog are great resources for learning what plants will grow where. Don't be afraid to ask questions, whether you are at the local garden center or call the seed catalog company.
There is always a way to grow your own organic garden, even if you have a small apartment. All you need is containers, the proper potting soil, organic fertilizer and the proper amount of light. Make sure that when using containers, that they drain properly, to accomplish this you will want to place a layer of gravel on the bottom before filling the container with potting mix and there are drainage hole on the bottom with a tray under it.
To encourage growth and survival, your container garden will need to be watered. Having the proper soil mix that retains moisture and drains well is very important. Check the soil daily to see if it is moist, it should feel like a squeezed out sponge, not soaked and dripping with water.
With a little simple planning, you can be on your way to growing a successful, thriving organic garden of your own. These gardens can be of flowers, herbs or vegetables, even a combination of all three. Companion planting with different plants is another method of organic gardening that has been around for centuries.
