The Compost Tumbler

by John Yazo

Compost tumblers are a method of composting that is neater and not as labor intensive as a traditional pile or bin. It has it's advantages if limited space or not wanting to look at a compost pile is a problem. There not really any faster in producing the end product of a rich humus material. The main advantage is that it is a lot easier to walk over to a tumbler and turn the crank to turn the organic material than it is to manually turn a compost pile.

This means you are more likely going to keep up on this part of the composting process with the tumbler. It is a very important part in keeping a pile cooking. This is why with most, they let the pile or bin turn to the cold method which just takes longer to decompose.

There are many different manufactures and models on the market and they all say they are the best. You really need to take the time to check the specifications on each model before you make your final choice. These tumblers can be a fairly expensive investment. There are models that stand vertically, horizontal, ones that are round and others with and without stands. Being comfortable to load and unload is another part that needs some thought. The types of material you are going to be composting will work better in one model and not the other.

Composting in a tumbler is no different than a compost pile. The proper mixture of carbon and nitrogen materials is what will determine how fast you composting system will produce a final product.
