Kitchen Composting Pails
by John Yazo
Kitchen composting pails are a neat and convenient way to store your kitchen food scrapes before bringing then to the compost pile. They can be nothing more than a container with a sealed secure lid, to a custom made or decorated, hand crafted pail. They are compact so they can be stored on the kitchen counter or ones made to fit in a cabinet under your sink.
You can purchase ones that are made specifically for this purpose. There are many different style compost pails on the market from one quart or larger containers that have a sealed lid, handles, looks that are appealing, filters for odor and are washable. like a butter tub, yogurt container or any thing similar.
These types of containers or pails can store your kitchen waste and should be emptied every day or two, depending on the amount of waste you generate. If left to long they can begin to let off an unpleasant odor that could travel throughout the entire house.
Depending on what type of composting system you choose is going to determine how you use your kitchen waste. It can be added to your compost pile and mixed in or left to cold compost or you can use a method that is called add-as-you-go-composting or even composting in a 5 gallon pail. The methods you can choose from are really unlimited. There are many was you can compost with a limited cost if not free. Start out small and once you get a system going you can always add on to the method you are using or change to one that better fits your needs.
