Kitchen Composting

Composting is another way of going green in your kitchen. The waste materials from fruits, vegetables, coffee grounds, egg shells and even bakery items are all very valuable when composted and used in your garden, container plantings and even for your household plants. Kitchen waste is one of the larger ingredients in a compost pile.
Having a compost container in your kitchen is a great way to compost your kitchen waste and not let it end up in the trash. There are more items in the kitchen that are overlooked and not included in most home compost piles. Taking the time to make a list of all items that are organic in your kitchen is a good way to start and realize how much you can be composting. If you need to you can even break this list into categories like, breakfast, lunch, dinner and supplies kept on hand. You will be surprised on how many items you use everyday in your kitchen that can be composted.
Many think that composting in the kitchen is a messy process and it smells. This is not the case if composting is done properly. There are many stylish composting containers on the market today that range in size from a crock style container that stays on the counter to a full operational self contained composter that fits under the counter, these units are no larger than a trash pail. These units that are made for the household are also supplied with a filter to prevent the smell of odors.
Compost produced from your kitchen waste is one of the most nutrient rich types of compost. You can produce a nutrient rich humus that will greatly benefit your organic garden, whether it be gardening in pots, containers, window boxes or the traditional backyard garden. It is the best type of soil amendment you can use to improve the soil structure in a garden, while adding a food source for the vasty community of live that calls your gardens soil home, and works hard improving it's structure, while adding it's own nutrients to benefit plant life naturally.
