Add As You Go Composting

by John Yazo

Add as you go composting or cold composting is the most common method used by most. It is when you add organic waste to your pile or bins gradually as the material is available to you. There is no storing of material and sorting it into layers as you would in a hot compost pile that is turned regularly. This method is just left to decompose over time.

When composting with this method you will only need a limited amount of tools. A compost bin or area to make a pile, the system you choose can either be one that you make or one that you purchase, an area with a soil base to set it up on, a source of water to moisten the material when needed, a pitchfork and a method of carrying the organic waste to the pile. One other tool that is real handy is the compost aerator, it is specifically made for turning compost piles and aerating them to help the decomposition of the material.

This method is great when you are not in a hurry. Just keep adding material to the pile and turn it every once in a while, even if it's just two or three times like once in the spring, summer and fall. It will take time but you will still end up with a nutrient rich humus material at the end that will greatly benefit the structure of your gardens soil.

Any way you choose to compost the organic waste from your household or yard is a great way to add organic matter and nutrients back into the soil for plants to benefit from.
