by John Yazo

Catch crops are crops that are planted between or simultaneously with other crops. It is a way that allows you to be more efficient with the land you are gardening. It can be a part of your vegetable, flower or herb garden and even a part an edible landscape. The benefits can be great, from adding nutrients into the soil for other crops to grow, to suppression of weeds and improving the soils structure. It is a part of organic gardening that is overlooked by most home gardeners.

This method when included with your organic gardening practices is a very beneficial way to improve the productivity of your crops. It is a combination of companion planting and succession planting all in one. With companion planting you are planting crops that will benefit the soil and the crops they are paired up with and succession planting you are planting crops simultaneously to make the most of the area you are gardening. There is no better way than to join these two methods together to benefit your garden in a cost effective way.

These methods are a common practice with nature. It is the natural way that the plants in our forests, fields and meadows all over the world are propagated by natural means.

When done correctly this method of gardening can add the nutrients needed to your gardens soil while improving the soils structure at the same time. It can also create a healthy environment to attract the beneficial predators that are needed in your garden to aid in the control of unwanted pests.
