How to Select Plants For Your Perennial Garden
by John Yazo
Perennial gardens can be a very rewarding experience if planned properly. When deciding what you want to plant for a garden, there is some research that is needed to be done to make a deliberate choice. We all have looked at all those luscious photo's in the plant catalogs or have seen all those irresistible plants at the local garden center, but are they really what will grow best in the garden we want to create. Here are some of the things that you should think about before you choose your plants.
The location of your site is the first thing to take into consideration. Perennials are just like any other plant, they will live a healthier and thriving life if planted in an environment that best fits there needs. Soil structure, sunlight, ph levels and the nutrient vales of the soil are all very important factors when choosing plants for a specific area, along with if the area you are planting is suitable, is it a steep slop, gently slope or is the area flat, along with is the area wet ordoes it drain well.
A plants hardiness is also important, this is what determines the locations, hardness zone, where a plant will do best in. Check and know the hardness zone you are in, and check the zones specified for the plants you want to grow. If a plant doesn't meet the hardness requirements for your area, it most likely wont survive during the winter months in your area. Being off by one zone can sometimes work, mulching during the cold months can help the plant survive.
When choosing the color or theme for your perennial garden, get creative and experement, and aim for a balance of contrast and integration. One way to keep your garden pleasing to the eye is by organizing it around one color or theme. Keep in mind that all perennials are not the same for bloom time. There are perennials that will bloom for only a couple weeks and ones that will bloom for as long as three months. If you are looking for a garden that will have flowers all season, choose a variety of different plants that will bloom at different times.
