Bonemeal And It's Benefits

by John Yazo

Bonemeal is a by-product made from defatted dried or steamed animal bones from slaughterhouses. It is crushed or ground and is a slow release organic fertilizer. It contains a high percentage of phosphorous that promotes cell and seed formation, cell division and healthy root growth in plants. Not all brands contain the same percentage of phosphorus. They can range from ten to thirteen percent depending on the manufacture. To check the percentage look at the list of the three elements that make up fertilizer on the package [N] nitrogen, [P] phosphorous and [K] potassium..

Bonemeal is generally used for roses and bulbs but can be used for just about any situation that a controlled release phosphorus fertilizer is called for.Mixing bone meal with soil and sprinkling a layer into the bottom of the holes that you have dug for your plants is the best way for plants to get the benefits from it. It should be applied close to the roots of the plants so the roots don't have to travel far to absorb the nutrients.Bonemeal being a slow release organic fertilizer will give your plants a continuous feeding of phosphorous throughout the growing season.

It is very important to have a soil with a good soil structure when using organic fertilizers.

Read all directions and warnings on the package for the proper handling procedures.
