Organic Garden - Encourage Beneficial Insects and Wildlife
by John Yazo
Working in harmony with nature and not against it is what organic gardening is all about. Predators, both beneficial and pests come in the form of insects and wildlife. They all are a very important part of our natural ecosystem and should be controlled with care.
The use of chemicals is not the the way to go when trying to control the pests in your organic garden, it will do more harm than good. Nature has it's own ways to balance the environment naturally. Wildlife in your garden, whether it be bats, birds, insects or a toad are all a very important part of the way nature balances or environment.
There is relatively a small amount of insects that will actually damage the crops in your garden severely enough to cause harm. The majority of the insects you will find are actually beneficial to your garden. These insects are what pollinate the crops and flowers in your gardens, along with preying on the insects that are considered pests.
Bats, birds and toads are excellent natural predators that you should create an environment to attract them to your garden. A bat can devour over 1000 flying insects in one night and a toad can easily eat over 100 insects in a day. Birds are another member of wildlife to have around your garden. They not only add beauty to your gardens, they also eat insects and weed seeds.
Providing a source of food, shelter and water will attract these natural allies to your yard and greatly benefit your organic garden. Birdhouses bat boxes, small rocks spread around in a dew locations, small wild patches of weeds and a few flowering herbs are all great choices to create a natural environment to attract and encourage the beneficial wildlife you need to greatly benefit your organic gardens.
