Atmosphere To Plant Seeds - Healthy Environment For A Healthy Plants

by John Yazo

To germinate your own seeds there are a few basic things that are needed, air, light, soil and warmth.

A good quality soil mix is very important when germinating seeds. The soil needs to retain a constant moisture as well as drain well. To much water is no good for the seeds. They just need to be kept moist. Seeds will absorb between forty and sixty percent of there weight in water before the will germinate.

Warmth is very important in getting seeds started. Most seeds need a temperature of sixty eight degrees Fahrenheit to germinate. After you have finished planting your seeds and watering them, they should be keep covered loosely with some type of clear plastic or put into a clear plastic bag with one end open. Don't cover the containers tightly. Seeds need air circulation. If the containers are covered to tight mold will start to form. You want to keep the containers cover just enough to keep the heat and moisture in the containers.

Keep the containers in a warm, draft free location with a preferred temperature of 65 degrees to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you don't have a location that is warm you can purchase a heat mat for germinating seeds. If you use a germination heat mat make sure it is made just for seed germination, be sure to fully read the warning labels and instructions before using.

Not all seeds need the same amount of light to germinate. There are seeds that don't need any light and others that do.

Once you notice seeds starting to germinate and emerging through the soil remove all plastic that covers  the containers. Move the containers into an area of indirect light and keep the soil mix moist.
