Sustainability - Aquaponic Gardening At Home

by John Yazo

Sustainability is a major topic around the world due to increasing food demands, degradation of ecosystems, water conservation and the growing consumer interest to know where, or how their food is produced. Aquaponics in your backyard can be the answer you are looking for. Creating a sustainable garden for your everyday needs can be an enjoyable and very rewarding experience.

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems are growing in popularity to the home gardener. They are a closed-loop system that filters and recycles water from a fish pond through a growing bed for plant life to benefit from. One of the biggest benefits of this type of system is water conservation. All the water, minus what is lost by evaporation and transpiration, is returned to the fish tank once filtered through the growing beds. Aquaponics uses 90 percent less water that the traditional methods of gardening with soil do.

The benefits don't stop with water conservation. There are no chemicals used with this method of gardening to pollute the environment, and during the process of recycling the water, non-toxic nutrients and organic matter are accumulated. These by-products are rich in nutrients that can greatly benefit secondary crops that are grown in the tradition method of organic gardening with soil. There is no waste with aquaponics and the companionship of organic gardening.

Another advantage with aquaponics is that it can be done indoors or outside, and from a system as small as a fish bowl to a full size commercial business. For the home gardener, it is an ideal way to garden year around. Systems can also be expanded to meet your needs at any time. Starting out small is the best way to get yourself familiar with any new method of gardening.

Flowers, fruits, herbs, and vegetables can all be successfully grow by this method of gardening. It is also an ideal method to use for creating a wildlife garden in the backyard to enjoy the natural beauty nature can only provide, while at the same time benefit the environment.

Having a sustainable gardens means you are able to continually produce a crop indefinitely without depleting natural resources or harming the environment. Aquaponics is a method of gardening that works in harmony with nature to create a natural environment that will benefit both fish and plant life. It is a system that can be created outdoors in your backyard, or even as an indoor garden.
