Aquaponics - Plant Selection

by John Yazo

Aquaponics is a true method of organic gardening. The recycling and reuse of nutrient rich water from a fish tank, just the way nature does it in lakes, rivers, streams and ponds naturally. A sustainable method that is healthy for both you and the environment.

If you are wondering what types of plants you can grow in an aquaponic system, the answer is just about any plant, with the exception of root crops. Flowers and herbs are an excellent choice for this method of gardening. Common fruit producing vegetable like, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, squash, and even melons do well, along with beans and peas. Leafy crops like lettuce and spinach are among the most common and most popular plants that are grown by this method, along with being the easiest to grow.

When choosing the crops you want to grow, flower, herb or vegetable, it is best to match the needs of the fish to the needs of the crop. There are similarities between the needs of both, fish and plant life, and getting this to match as close as possible can mean the difference between success and disappointment. Nature has a way of keeping things in balance in the environment, with aquaponics you will need to do the same to be successful.

Aquaponics can be an enjoyable experience and a very rewarding one. Gardening in harmony with nature is what is all about. Watch, along with learn what and how nature provides in your local area, and you will be on your way to a successful experience.
